On Writing

Nope, I’ll not be giving any tips; I’m asking questions.

I’ve been working on a writing project; it’s a personal narrative. Someone read a portion of it and gave me some pointers: The narrative moves too quickly. I need to give the reader time to smell the roses. He said that the portion I sent, if I took more time to establish the mood, could be 2 to 3 times longer.

I know that I was given good advice; I just don’t know how to follow it.

There are some good writers that read this blog. Can you give me some suggestions? How do you “flesh out a story,” or “establish a mood?” What books do you recommend?
