The Seed of a Woman

Consider this young woman. She was probably about fourteen. That was the customary age for young ladies to marry. She was not a queen or a princess. She was not the daughter of the high priest. She was a normal, poor girl from an insignificant family. But she feared God and had great faith.

She was not married, but she was betrothed. If she was unfaithful to Joseph, it was considered adultery according to the law. The penalty would be death by stoning if charges were brought and she was convicted. Imagine the fear that this would cause in a young lady. But what did she say?

“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Mary was with child—a “Holy Seed.” He was called the seed of a woman, which was not customary for Jewish babies. Sons were known by their fathers, not their mothers.

This was supernatural and extraordinary. And it was a sign that the one to come was not ordinary, but very special. And it was necessary. Necessary so that the child could be born spotless and without sin, so that He could be an acceptable sacrifice.

Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus our Immanuel.”
